Wangaratta Rural City Local History
Wangaratta Rural City is a vibrant town located in the northeastern part of Victoria, Australia. It has a population of approximately 28,000 people and is well-known for its rich agricultural produce and stunning natural beauty. However, the history of Wangaratta Rural City dates back to over 40,000 years when the area was inhabited by the Indigenous people of Australia, known as the Bpangerang people.
The Bpangerang people were known for their sophisticated fishing and hunting techniques and lived off the land by gathering fruits, nuts, and vegetables. They were also skilled in creating stone tools and weapons for their daily needs.
In the early 1800s, European exploration and settlement of the region began. Wangaratta Rural City was first explored by Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836, who was followed by a group of pastoralists in 1837. These pastoralists were attracted to the region's fertile grazing lands and established large sheep and cattle stations, which led to the displacement of the Bpangerang people from their traditional land.
The first European settlement in Wangaratta was established in 1843, when a Scottish immigrant named Robert Reid established the Glenrowan Station. The town continued to grow with the establishment of other stations such as Winton, Oxley, and Milawa.
In 1853, gold was discovered in the Ovens River near Beechworth, which led to the gold rush. Wangaratta became a bustling town as miners flocked to the region to seek their fortunes. The gold rush also brought significant wealth to the region, leading to the construction of many public buildings such as schools, hospitals, and government offices.
In 1861, Wangaratta was officially declared a town, and by the 1870s, it had emerged as a significant regional hub for agriculture and commerce. The railway line connecting Wangaratta with Melbourne was opened in 1873, which helped to boost the town's growth and prosperity.
During the early 1900s, Wangaratta experienced a period of significant growth, which led to the establishment of many important institutions and infrastructure projects. The first hospital was established in 1904, and a new courthouse was constructed in 1908. The town also experienced a significant development of its urban infrastructure, with the sealing of roads, the establishment of street lighting, and the construction of a new water supply system.
In 1994, Wangaratta Rural City was established after the amalgamation of several local government areas. Today, it is a thriving regional city that is home to a diverse range of industries, including agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism.
